Overview on the BME lab†

The Biomechanical Engineering Lab was founded by Prof. Hao Liu, in which we have been looking into the mechanical phenomenon in biological systems, namely biomechanics, and how the “complex” biological mechanical system works. We explore novel biomechanisms associated with insect & bird flights, animal swimming, and human cardiovascular system in terms of complex biofluids, fluid and flexible structure interaction, aeroacoustics, bioflight control, bio-thermodynamics, and multi-scale haemodynamics, by means of a triune platform comprising an integrated computational mechanical system, experimental facilities involving an ultra-low-speed wind tunnel and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) system, and a bio-motion capture system with high speed cameras. We further carry out R&D (Research and Development) of insect / bird-inspired flapping micro air vehicles (MAV) and next generation drones as well as bioinspired micro-wing turbines and fluid machinery, by taking the biomimetics or bioinspiration to emulate or inspire nature’s time-tested patterns, functions and strategies as innovative technologies in terms of diversity, optimality and robustness. We aim to open up a new field of bioinspired engineering to bridge biology and engineering, and through taking the B3 (biomechanics, biomimetics, bioinspiration) strategies, to bring breakthroughs into sustainable IoT (Internet of Things) technological innovation on energy and resource-saving-based manufacturing.

Facilities at Liu Lab

Wind Tunnel: low speed wind tunnel with wind speed ranging from 0.1m/s-11m/s, 1% turbulence for wind speed over 3m/s. PIV system: used for flow field visualization.
