Assistant Professor Nakata of our lab and co-working team in the UK have been working to find out why mosquitoes are able to fly in the dark and avoid obstacles. The airflow caused by the flapping of the mosquitoes' wings was simulated by numerical calculations. As a result, the tactile sensitivity of mosquitoes would be about 30-40 mm away, which is nearly 10 times the distance of their body length. It turns out that mosquitoes are able to detect the obstacle by sensing the air fluctuation. Based on these findings, an international team of researchers has developed a drone to detect airflow fluctuations caused by propellers. The function was evaluated and demonstrated to be able to detect walls and floors as well as mosquitoes. (Aerodynamic imaging by mosquitoes inspires a surface detector for autonomous flying vehicles, Toshiyuki Nakata, Nathan Phillips, Patricio Simoes, Ian J Russell, Jorn A Cheney, Simon M Walker, Richard J Bomphrey, Science, 2020; 368, 6491, 634-637.DOI: DOI:https://science.sciencemag.org/content/368/6491/634
